Thousands of drains.
24/7 operation.
No maintenance windows.

The airport operates 24 hours a day, so there is never a convenient moment to take floor drains out of service. Seasonal peaks at Dublin, Cork and Shannon — summer, Christmas and big sporting fixtures — stretch cleaning teams further still.Green Drain™ is a passive one-way silicone insert that keeps the drain closed when nothing is flowing, so odours and sewer gases stay in the pipe. It has no moving parts to service and an expected service life of about five years.

Problem & solution

The particular challenge at airports.

The terminal operates 18–24 hours a day, and hangars and technical support work around the clock. Passenger washrooms are heavily used during the day and barely used at night, and any trap left unused for two to four weeks will lose its water seal.

Without Green Drain™

  • Terminal washrooms — heavily used by day, all but empty overnight.
  • Peak season (May to September) — washrooms are stretched and odour complaints become noticeable.
  • Hangars and technical areas have large central floor gullies that are rarely run.
  • Customs and security zones — restricted access makes routine maintenance awkward.
  • Little-used traps (seasonal stands, closed piers, plant rooms) dry out unnoticed and let sewer gas into the building.

With Green Drain™

  • No disruption to operations — a typical washroom is fitted in about 30 minutes.
  • No chemicals and no water top-up, which suits airports working towards Airport Carbon Accreditation.
  • Stands up to intensive cleaning — chlorine, quaternary ammonium compounds and professional cleaning agents.
  • Tested to ASSE 1072-2020 and compatible with drains built to EN 1253 — documentation available for technical review.
  • One specification covers passenger, customs and back-of-house zones.
Irish Airports — Verified Information

A major hub for European aviation.

Dublin Airport, operated by daa, handled 33.3 million terminal passengers in 2024; Dublin and Cork together handled 37.7 million. Cork (ORK) and Shannon (SNN) are the other international gateways. Terminal washrooms, airline lounges and food and beverage outlets are where drain odour is noticed first, because throughput is high and the building never closes.

Data Sources and Regulatory Framework (2024–2025 data)

Statistical data taken from official Irish and EU sources: Central Statistics Office Ireland (cso.ie), Health Service Executive (hse.ie), Fáilte Ireland (failteireland.ie), Bord Bia (bordbia.ie), IDA Ireland (idaireland.com), Health Products Regulatory Authority (hpra.ie). Regulatory framework: EUR-Lex for EU directives — EU 2017/745 (MDR), EC 852/2004 (food hygiene, HACCP), EU 1935/2004 and EU 10/2011 (food contact materials), EU 528/2012 (BPR), EU 2014/34 (ATEX). Standards: EN 1253-1 (floor P-traps, water seal ≥50 mm), EN 1253 Parts 6/7/8 (gullies with a water seal below 50 mm, with mechanical closure, and combined types; 2023 editions), HACCP International RG-04, ASSE 1072-2020, NSF/ANSI 2, HSE AMRIC (Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control) guidance. Notes on status: Green Drain™ is an insert fitted into an existing drain, not a factory-made gully, so it is compatible with drains built to EN 1253 rather than certified to it; it is classified Class I under EU MDR 2017/745 with conformity self-declared under Annex IV (the manufacturer is registered in EUDAMED under SRN DK-MF-000052289 — there is no third-party MDR certificate), it does not prevent, diagnose or treat disease and supplements rather than replaces infection prevention and control protocols; NSF/ANSI 2 evidence is a listing (C0571796); HACCP International RG-04 is a private certification programme and it remains for the operator to decide whether to include the product in their own HACCP plan. Revision date: May 2026.

Implementation

Fitted during the night-time window.

Most large airports have a four- to six-hour quiet period overnight. We work zone by zone in that window, escorted by security where required.

01

Audit

Our technician maps the terminal, hangar and customs areas under escort.

02

Pilot zone

One washroom or customs zone, reviewed after 30 days.

03

Specification

Sizes and locations are written up and added to the airport's planned maintenance system.

04

Roll-out

By zones during the night slots — one zone = one night.

Model Recommendation

Recommended sizes by airport zone.

Irish airports (Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Kerry, Knock, Donegal) each have structurally distinct zones. Passenger washrooms are mostly 50–58 mm. Airline lounges vary. Hangars, MRO workshops and cargo areas are industrial in scale.
