A drain that smells of sewage has almost always lost the water in its trap. Cleanliness has very little to do with it. A P-trap seals with water. When that water evaporates — and it does, in two to four weeks in a drain nobody uses — nothing stands between the room and the sewer. Hydrogen sulphide, methane and ammonia pass straight through.
That is why cleaning does not help, and why the smell comes back a few days after every attempt. The permanent fix is not a stronger product; it is replacing the water seal with a mechanical one.
How a trap works, and why it fails
A P-trap is the U-shaped section of pipe under every drain. It holds a few hundred millilitres of water, and that water is what separates the room from the sewer. While it is there, gases cannot get past.
The water arrives on its own — every hand wash, shower and mop bucket tops the trap up. In a building in use the system maintains itself. The problem starts the moment a drain stops being used.
How fast the water goes depends on room temperature, humidity, airflow and the temperature of the pipe below. In a heated building, two to four weeks. In dry winter air, faster.
Nothing has broken. The trap is doing exactly what it was designed to do — it simply needs water that is no longer there.
Why the usual remedies do not work
Every popular fix treats the symptom. None of them restores the water seal.

How a passive seal works
A silicone one-way seal fits inside the body of the existing drain. Water arriving from above opens the valve under its own weight and passes through. When flow stops, the valve closes and gases cannot travel upward — whether or not there is water in the trap below.

Where the problem shows up
Homes and apartments
Guest bathrooms, basements, garages, utility rooms — drains used rarely or never. Holiday lets are the worst case: a fortnight empty, and the guest walks into the smell.
Hotels
Coastal and seasonal properties close a wing, or the whole house, for part of the winter. By the time the doors open again, every trap in the closed rooms is dry. Schools

Hospitals and care homes
Here odour is the lesser problem. Hospital drains are a documented reservoir of multi-resistant organisms, and a dry trap is an open path from the sewer into the room. More in hospital drains as a hidden infection source.

When the trap is not the cause
If it smells while the trap still holds water, check three things:
- Stack venting. An under-vented stack siphons the trap when a fixture upstairs discharges. Needs a plumber.
- Access cover seals. A perished seal lets gas past the trap entirely.
- Biofilm in the throat. The slime layer of bacteria, soap and grease smells in its own right — see why bleach is not the answer.
